IPTV apps: the players that open a playlist

What an IPTV app actually does

An IPTV client does four things: it takes in a source, interprets it, presents it in a navigable interface and plays the video stream. The source can be an M3U playlist — a text file listing channels and addresses — or an Xtream Codes portal, which the app connects to with a username and password, receiving channels, programme guide and any archive dynamically.

None of these apps includes content — the distinction between technology and service is set out in the guide to what IPTV is. If you have downloaded a client and the channel list is empty, the program is working correctly: the source is missing. Who supplies that source, and on what basis, is a legal question before it is a technical one.

The three families, and when each makes sense

Dedicated clients

These are programs built for one purpose. They handle several playlists, sort and hide channel groups, match the programme guide against the list, remember favourites and in several cases record. They are the right choice if you watch television every day and want something close to a set-top box.

TiviMate and OTT Navigator are the reference points on Android TV and Fire TV: both have a limited free version and a paid one. Televizo and IPTV Extreme cover phone and tablet use better. On iOS and tvOS, where App Store rules narrow the category considerably, there are four complete clients: UHF, IPTVX, Smarters Player Lite and GSE.

Media centres

Kodi was not born as an IPTV client: it is a media centre which, once you add the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, reads M3U playlists and XMLTV programme guides. It makes sense if you already use it for a personal film and music library and want a single interface for everything.

Media players

VLC opens an .m3u file and plays the first valid stream. It is the right tool for exactly one job: checking quickly whether a source works, isolating the problem when a dedicated client shows a black screen. As a sofa program it is unsuitable — the interface assumes a mouse.

IPTV players for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV

On iOS and tvOS there is no sideloading: you install from the App Store only, and there are four complete IPTV players.

How to choose in five minutes

1. Start from the device. Open the store on your television, stick or phone and look at what is genuinely available for that platform. It is the tightest constraint and it should be checked before anything else.
2. Check the kind of source. Do you have an .m3u file or link, or a portal address with a username and password? In the second case you need an app that states Xtream Codes support.
3. Decide whether you need the programme guide. If you watch two or three channels, the EPG is beside the point. If you have hundreds, the list is unusable without a schedule.
4. Try the free version before paying. Nearly every app in the table has a free tier or a trial long enough to tell whether the interface suits you.
5. Check how it flows with the remote. If reaching a setting means using a virtual pointer, that app was not designed for a television.

What no app can fix

Three limits are worth stating plainly, because they account for most of the disappointment.

A player does not improve the quality of a stream. If the source transmits at a low bitrate, the picture will stay mediocre in any app. A player does not stabilise an overloaded source: if the server is saturated at peak times, changing program changes nothing — the real causes of stalling are collected in the buffering guide. And no player makes an unauthorised source authorised: responsibility follows whoever supplies and whoever accesses the content, not the tool used to watch it.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best free IPTV app?

Among the genuinely free apps with no restrictions, VLC and Kodi are the only complete ones, but neither is comfortable from the sofa. Apps designed for the television are almost all freemium: free in a reduced version, paid for multiple playlists, recording or the removal of advertising.

Are IPTV apps legal?

Yes. They are players, exactly like a browser or an email program. What may not be legal is the content you load into them.

Why can my app not find the programme guide?

In most cases because the tvg-id values in the playlist do not match the identifiers in the EPG file, or because no EPG source was configured at all. The checking procedure is in the EPG guide.

Can I use the same app on more than one device?

It depends on the licence. Smart TV apps generally tie activation to the MAC address of the individual television; Android apps with an in-app purchase follow the Google account and work on devices signed in to it.
